Eye strain

Eye strain occurs when the eyes become tired from performing more specific activities that require stronger vision, such as driving and prolonged reading or computer work.


Although eyestrain can be bothersome, it is usually not serious and goes away after a person takes a break from activities that require more intense eye strain.

In some cases, the signs and symptoms of the condition may point to an underlying eye disease that requires treatment.

Although a person may not be able to change the nature of their work and not expose themselves to all the factors that lead to eye strain, they can take steps to avoid this condition.

What are the symptoms?

• Eye pain, fatigue, burning or itching;
• Tearing;
• Dry eyes;
• Blurred or double vision ;
• Headache;
• Sore throat;
• Back pain;
• Painful sensations in the shoulder;
• Increased sensitivity to light;
• Difficulty focusing;

Prolonged, uninterrupted use of computers or other digital electronic devices can lead to many of these symptoms.

When to seek medical help?

If home remedies are not successful in relieving the symptoms of eye fatigue, consult an eye doctor.

It is recommended to seek qualified help if, in addition to the above symptoms, you develop the following additional ones:

• Severe discomfort in the eyes;
• Significant change in visual acuity;
• You find that you see double for too long;
• Excessive headache;

What are the causes?

• Excessive use of computer or digital electronic devices;
• Prolonged reading and especially if it is done in artificial light;
• Other activities related with a prolonged period of intense visual focus and concentration, such as driving a vehicle.
• Frequent exposure to very bright light or reflections, such as when skiing;
• Vision strain in very dim light ;

One of the most common causes of eye strain is prolonged use of a computer without interruption. This type of fatigue is called computer vision syndrome.

In some cases, an existing eye problem can worsen or cause the syndrome, such as refractive error and eye muscle imbalance.

Risk factors for eye strain are:

• Generalized stress and fatigue;
• Extremely dry air or frequent movement from a place with warm air to rooms that are air-conditioned.

What are the complications?

Eye strain is not a serious condition and does not cause the development of long-term negative effects on visual acuity, but it can be embarrassing and unpleasant.


And it can make a person feel tired and make it difficult to concentrate. In some cases, it may take several days for the symptoms to completely resolve.

Treatment of eye strain

Treatment usually consists of making temporary changes in work habits or the environment in which the sufferer spends most of the time.

In some cases, the condition of vision may improve after starting treatment of another concomitant disease.

For some people, wearing glasses that are designed for specific activities such as computer use or reading can help reduce eye strain.

Ophthalmologists usually recommend to preserve the health of the eyes, performing exercises in which the vision is focused at different distances, which helps to strengthen the eye muscles.
