What is hypertension?

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a widespread medical condition. Some people think that hypertensives are constantly tense, nervous and hyperactive, but hypertension has nothing to do with personality traits.

The truth is that calm and serene people can also have high blood pressure.

What is blood pressure?

Your body’s organs need oxygen to exist. Oxygen is delivered to every part of the body through the blood.

When the heart beats, it creates pressure that pushes the blood through a network of tubes known to us as arteries and veins or also as blood vessels and capillaries.

Blood pressure is the result of two quantities. The first measures the pressure that the blood exerts on the blood vessels when the heart pumps blood to the arteries.

The second measures the pressure on the blood vessels when the heart is at rest and not pumping blood. These two quantities are measured when blood pressure is measured.

Symptoms of high blood pressure

Most people with hypertension don’t have any symptoms, so you can tell if you have high blood pressure just by measuring it.

Blood pressure is the force with which the blood presses against the walls of the arteries as they pass.

Normal blood pressure is considered to be around 120/80 mm Hg. pillar, and higher values ​​can be an indicator of hypertension.

If your values ​​regularly exceed this limit, then it is important to seek medical advice and take measures to control your blood pressure.

Having symptoms of hypertension may be because the high blood pressure is too much, which can lead to serious problems.

In such cases, symptoms may include severe headaches, blurred vision, experiencing blackouts or flashes in the visual field, and even seizures and loss of consciousness.

However, it should be noted that such complications are very rare and often occur in people with very high blood pressure values ​​who have not received appropriate treatment.

Unfortunately, hypertension is often perceived as a “silent killer” because it can progress without noticeable symptoms but gradually damage our organs, especially the heart, kidneys, brain and eyes.

High blood pressure increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney failure and other serious health problems.

That is why it is extremely important to measure blood pressure regularly and take measures to control and reduce its values ​​if they are elevated.

This may include lifestyle changes such as exercise, a healthy diet, smoking cessation and stress management, as well as taking medication if your doctor recommends it.

Regular medical examinations and consultations with a doctor are essential to maintain good health and prevent possible complications related to high blood pressure.

Complications of hypertension

When measures are not taken to normalize blood pressure for a long time, there is a risk of developing serious diseases such as:

  • Cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack, stroke, heart failure or atrial fibrillation – irregular heart rhythm;
  • Kidney damage;< /li>
  • Impairment of vision.

Treatment of hypertension

If treatment is required it is very likely that it will be in the long term plan, as hypertension is not easily treatable.

You may need to go to hospital if your blood pressure gets too high, but treatment is usually and recommended by your GP.

Self-help advice

Your GP will advise you to make lifestyle changes such as:

  • Stopping smoking;
  • Changing eating habits – limiting the consumption of fatty foods, reducing the intake of salt and eating more fruits and vegetables ;
  • Reducing alcohol intake;
  • Avoiding coffee and caffeinated drinks such as Coke;
  • Doing aerobic exercises regularly;
  • Losing extra pounds.

Reducing stress in everyday life, if possible, is also helpful in hypertension. This prevents a short-term sharp rise in blood pressure. You could also help yourself with relaxation or meditation techniques.

Whenever your blood pressure is high, try to eat 1-2 lightly crushed garlic cloves. Crushed garlic cloves generate hydrogen sulfide, which helps the blood flow well and lowers the pressure on the heart.

You can also drink 5-6 drops of garlic juice mixed with 50 ml. water twice a day for better results.

Treatment of hypertension with medication

If your blood pressure remains high despite the changes you have made, your GP may prescribe one of the following medications to treat hypertension:

ACE inhibitors such as ramipril or angiotensin II receptor antagonists such as candesatran – they relax and dilate blood vessel walls by reducing the production of hormones that contribute to blood vessel constriction.
