Is water from plastic bottles dangerous to health?

German and American scientists attempted to answer this long-standing question.

Workers at the supermarkets note that their customers have recently been increasingly buying water sold in plastic bottles.

Of course, the advantage of the product in such packaging is obvious – its weight is significantly less and plastic, unlike glass, does not break when hit or dropped.

Nevertheless, scientists were able to establish after a series of experiments that harmful chemical substances contained in the packaging can get into the water in a plastic bottle.

Scientists have tried to clarify how this health-threatening water pollution occurs and why they recommend that people put glass bottles in their shopping carts whenever possible.

Do they change the hormonal balance?

Beverages are an integral part of the daily food intake of every person. However, all of us are probably now wondering what amounts of fluids can he drinks from plastic bottles so as not to harm his health.

Recently, research associates at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University of Frankfurt, Germany, published the results of their latest research, within which they were able to establish the presence in plastic bottles for drinking water, that is, mineral or spring, the presence of hormone-like substances in composition similar to the female sex hormone estrogen.

“In 12 of the 20 mineral water bottles of different manufacturers selected for our experiments, we found chemical compounds that do not have a favorable effect on humans and, in addition, affect their endocrine system. “

This is what Martin Wagner, head of the Department of Biochemistry, Chemistry and Pharmacy, said in an interview with a German medical journal.

Tap water – the most harmless

In the tap water used by the scientists during the experiments as a comparison material, a significantly smaller amount of side impurities was found.

Researchers from the University of Frankfurt stress that, from the results of their research, no specific conclusions should yet be drawn about the degree of risk to the health of people who buy and drink water from plastic bottles.

Nevertheless, the scientific collaborators managed to obtain a sufficiently clear picture of the diffusion /dispersion/ of natural hormones in food products, obtained /the clear picture/ based on a hypothesis, as a result of the last contact with the plastic packaging.

In this way, the medical specialists found, as well as assumed, that such chemical substances as plasticizers contained in the plastic packaging, due to the washing action of the water, they fall into it.

We compared samples of mineral water stored in plastic and glass bottles; chemical experiments showed that the content of estrogenic substances in the water from plastic bottles was 2 times higher in the concentration of these compounds compared to that from glass bottles,” Professor Wagner also points out.

Is plastic dangerous?

At the moment, scientists and doctors cannot give an unequivocal answer to this question, how dangerous is the water that is stored and offered in plastic bottles. But the above research of German scientists will invariably serve as a starting point for further scientific experiments. At the moment, however, scientists are sure that the concentration of impurities in the water in glass bottles is significantly lower than in plastic bottles.

The secret of good health is in glass containers

Scientists recommend that if we do not want water to have an adverse effect on our health, we should buy it in glass bottles if possible. But if we still have to buy drinks in plastic packaging, it is desirable that they be made of hard plastic, as it contains less plasticizers.
