Mullet – for a healthy heart

Mullet is rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which protect against atherosclerosis.

The name mullet comes from the Greek word “cephalus”, which translates as “head”, and therefore the peoples who live along the Black Sea coast gave this fish other names.

What are the advantages of mullet?

First of all, it is a very tasty and non-greasy fish. There are practically no small bones, therefore it belongs to the group of healthy foods. The mullet is also low in calories – 88 kcal per 100 g. The fat of this fish is an excellent source of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids.

These compounds are part of the fish oil capsules, which are recommended for elderly people, as this dietary supplement reduces the risk of myocardial infarction and normalizes the function of the nervous system.


Omega-3 fatty acids are also beneficial for the skin, as they contribute to the preservation of its surface lipid layer, which performs a protective function and prevents the penetration of disease-causing bacteria through the skin.

The mullet also contains a significant amount of proteins – about 20%. This fish also contains phosphorus, necessary for the construction of the skeleton, zinc – for the formation of sex cells, and is also a good source of the trace elements manganese, potassium and iodine.

How to choose a mullet?

Choosing this fish, you need to see if its eyes are transparent, if they are cloudy, then the fish is not fresh. The gills of the mullet should be pink and clean. The flesh of this fish should be firm and the gills smell of the sea.

How is it stored?

Cleaned mullet, as well as if it is dried, can be stored in the refrigerator for no more than 2 days. If you need to store it longer, wrap it in foil and put itin a vacuum box or package. In this form, it can be stored in a freezer, at minus 18 degrees Celsius, for a maximum period of 2 months.

How is it prepared?

Mullet can be prepared in different ways. But, if you want to fry it, it is advisable to do this without oil and on a pan with a ceramic coating. And if you want to make soup from this fish, you should know that the meat of the mullet should be boiled for no more than 20 minutes.
