What kind of fish protects against cancer?

British scientists have found that omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in salmon and trout in huge quantities, suppress the growth and cause the death of atypical cells during the early and late stages of oral cancer and on the skin.

According to the results of the study, omega-3 fatty acids induce the self-destruction of malignant and pre-malignant cells at doses and do not affect healthy normal cells, which testifies to the possibility that this group of fats can be used for treatment and prevention of certain types of cancers of the skin and oral cavity.

During the experiment, the scientists researched squamous cell carcinoma – one of the main forms of skin cancer. In terms of prevalence, this disease ranks 6th in the world among types of cancer, and its treatment is complex and expensive.

Within the conducted experiments, the scientists grew cell cultures from different cell lines /malignant and pre-malignant cells of squamous cell cancer of the oral cavity and skin, as well as normal cells of the oral cavity and skin / and added fatty acids to them.

“We found that omega-3 fatty acids selectively inhibit the growth of malignant and pre-malignant cells in amounts that do not affect healthy cells,” notes Professor Kenneth Parkinson of the Queen Mary Institute of Dentistry.

Scientists have found that this property of this group of fats is due to the excessive stimulation of a major growth factor that causes cell death.

And the amounts of omega-3 fatty acids used do not affect healthy cells. In the study, eicosapentaenoic acid was applied to cell cultures, which can be used for the prevention and treatment of skin and oral cancer.

Possibly, omega-3 fatty acids may help patients who are at increased risk of developing these types of cancer and also those who are at high risk of recurrence .

Furthermore, the required amount of fatty acids can be easily applied to the skin surface affected by the cancer.

However, despite the encouraging results obtained when conducting the above-described study, further studies are needed.
