Impotence

Description

Impotence or erectile dysfunction /ED/ is a medical condition in which a man cannot get or maintain an erection long enough and to a degree that allows him to have intercourse.

When erectile problems are occasional, they are not necessarily a cause for concern. But if the lack of erection is permanent, it can cause great stress in the affected man, lead to problems in his relationship with his partner and affect his self-esteem.

However, a man may be uncomfortable talking to a doctor about his erectile dysfunction and this is one of the reasons for not seeking timely medical help.

Inability to arouse the penis with sexual stimulation may be a sign of a health problem that needs treatment, such as cardiovascular disease or untreated diabetes.

Treatment of the underlying causative disease may be sufficient to restore erection.

If treatment of the underlying cause does not restore erectile function, medications and other methods can be used to directly treat erectile dysfunction.
