Viagra with a new purpose – protects against heart disease

When the drug “Viagra” was launched on the market, the gratitude of most men to the people who created the drug knew no bounds.

But scientists decided to go further by proposing that Viagra become a useful and safe drug for diseases of the cardiovascular system.

And thanks to numerous and long-term scientific studies, it has been established that long-term and regular use of the preparation “Viagra” protects the heart from many diseases and most importantly without a single side effect. The results of the latest definitive study have been published in the journal BMC Medicine.

Scientists note that the active ingredient of the preparation “Viagra”, as well as other drugs for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, is a selective inhibitor of cyclic guanosine monophosphate /cGMP/ – a specific inhibitor of the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 /PDE5i/.

This substance blocks the PDE5 enzyme, which makes it difficult for muscle tissues to relax. The PDE5 enzyme is also present in the heart – precisely because of this, scientists have long studied the possibility of how the preparation “Viagra” can be adapted for use not only in urology.

In order to confirm the truth of this hypothesis, scientists from the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Italy, made a meta-analysis of randomized /randomized/ control clinical trials of the preparation. A review of the scientific medical literature for the period from 2004 to 2014, published in the 4 largest scientific databases /Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library and Scopus/ was performed.

Scientists found 24 cases of PDE5i use, where it was possible to check the effect of the substance on the condition of the heart muscle. In all included in the analysis, clinical trials participated 1622 men from different countries.

Italian scientists found that in patients suffering from left ventricular hypertrophy /the disease is characterized by enlargement and thickening of the heart muscle/, the active ingredient of the preparation “Viagra” suppressed the enlargement and expansion of the heart muscle.

In addition, PDE5i improved cardiac function in all clinical trial participants, regardless of their health status, and no side effects in terms of blood pressure were observed.

The study authors say that PDE5i can be recommended to men who suffer from thickening and hardening of the heart muscle and from heart failure /in the early stages of the disease/.

In order for the medical community to be convinced of the effectiveness of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors, scientists recommend conducting large-scale clinical studies.

First of all, he needs to find out how these inhibitors affect the body of women.

Until now, all clinical trials of Viagra have been conducted only with the participation of men – the users of the preparation “Viagra”.
