5 basic rules for cleaning sex toys

After enjoying the dizzying orgasm, it is crucial to properly clean the sex toy that sent you soaring. Good intimate hygiene also includes washing the entertainment devices regularly to avoid getting a fungus or any other sexually transmitted infection. According to studies, only 35 percent of women who have fun with sex toys clean them every time after use.

Follow these five simple rules recommended by Jolie Kerr, author of the book My Boyfriend Ended Up in My Handbag.

1. Find out what the sex toy is made of

When you buy sex toys, you need to find out what they are made of, as the specifics of the material and whether it is electric with batteries and a motor determine the cleaning method. Usually, this information is reflected on the packaging, but if it’s not, ask a sales associate or look up product information online, Kerr advises.

2. How to wash motorized toys

If the sex toy is made of silicone, glass, stainless steel or wood and has an electric motor, use a mild soap and a damp cloth to wipe it and clean up However, be careful with the area where the batteries are placed.

3. Sex toys without batteries can be boiled

Sex toys made of silicone, stainless steel or stone that do not have batteries can be placed for 8-10 minutes in boiling water. This method is suitable for deeper cleaning. Another option is to put them in the dishwasher, but without using a liquid detergent or tablet. The hot steam treatment works like sterilization, says Kerr.

4. Bathe the sex doll with soap and water only

For sex dolls use only a little soap and warm water to clean them. Too much foam, or more aggressive cleaners, can damage sensitive materials.

5. For plastic and rubber vibrators, use a condom

Vibrators made of hard plastics, elastomer, thermoplastic materials, silicone or rubber are porous and retain many STD bacteria – even after washing with soap and water. So it’s best to use a condom if you plan to play with them with your partner, advises Kerr.

Among other things, special wipes and sprays for cleaning sex toys are sold on the market. They are especially suitable for those who have clefts. If water gets into them, it can damage them. The easiest to wash are those made of medical latex, glass, steel and with smooth surfaces. After you clean them, let them dry completely or dry them with a clean paper towel. It is a good idea to store sex toys in a silk bag to protect them from contamination and bacteria.
