Catfish – a guarantee of health and longevity

The catfish is the largest freshwater predator. It inhabits eddies and dirty river pits and can reach a weight of up to 300 kg, and such specimens, according to scientists, are 80-100 years old. But most often catfish weigh 10-20 kg. p>

Unlike the rest of the fish, the catfish is without scales.

This predatory fish has a lot of meat, containing many useful amino acids and fats. Catfish meat is an excellent source of trace elements, with the largest amount of potassium, without which the normal functioning of the human body is impossible.

Potassium prevents swelling and normalizes blood pressure, unlike sodium, which retains fluid.

Catfish meat is a better source of potassium than pike and trout. In addition to potassium, catfish meat also contains many other valuable macro and microelements for the human body, such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, phosphorus, chlorine, sulfur, iron, zinc, iodine, copper, chromium, fluorine, mobile , cobalt and nickel.

Catfish meat is a relatively good source of A, B1, B2, B6, B9, C, E, PP. It also contains significant amounts of fats and proteins, which are a source of energy for the human body.

Catfish meat contains all amino acids, which are of a higher quality than vegetable proteins.

If a person consumes approximately 200 grams of meat from this fish, he can get the amount of animal protein he needs for the day, since the ratio of essential amino acids to the total amount of protein in this meat is quite high.

The content in catfish meat of the amino acid lysine is particularly high, but in cereals it is low, therefore this fish is particularly suitable for a diet consisting mainly of cereals.

The body of catfish contains only 2% connective tissue /bones, tendons and skin/, while in beef and pork this ratio is 8 to 10, and sometimes more percent.

Due to the low content of connective tissue, catfish meat is much easier to digest than that of mammals, and this is important for people with a sedentary lifestyle.

Catfish meat is useful for children and young people, who have a great need for proteins in the growth process.

Catfish meat is good for the skin, mucous membranes, nervous and digestive systems, it regulates blood sugar perfectly, and it also contains some antioxidants.

Catfish store fat in their guts, and the properties of fat-rich cod liver are well known to most of us.

How to choose a catfish?

First of all, we need to determine if there really is a catfish in front of us. This fish has no scales, a large head, a flat mouth, two small eyes and whiskers. The tail of the catfish does not look like a fish, but is flattened laterally and it is not clear where it starts.

A fresh fish should not have cloudy eyes, its gills should be pink, and its belly should be white and not bloated. When pressing the body of the fish with a finger, the pit that appeared should immediately return to its original position.

How is it stored?

Chilled catfish fillet can be stored no more than 2 days and is preferably on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator.

The cleaned and washed fish is wrapped in foil and placed in a vacuum container and can be stored in a freezer for no more than 2-3 months.

Meat from oily fish, such as catfish, cannot be stored for too long as it goes rancid.
