Does a simple manicure cause cancer?

It turns out that even a simple manicure can be potentially dangerous to health, because during the procedure of making it in the beauty salon we are exposed to ultraviolet radiation.

Nevertheless, scientists are quick to reassure that beauty salons have nothing to fear.

The procedure in which we do a manicure in the beauty salon also includes the drying of the nail polish using a special lamp. These lighting fixtures are a source of ultraviolet radiation, which is known to be associated with the development of skin cancer.

“Considering the amount of UV radiation that affects the skin during a manicure procedure, it is clear that to reach the level at which DNA damage occurs and the risk of developing cancer increases, it is necessary to visit a beauty salon too many times “- notes Dr. Lindsay Shipp from the Department of Dermatology at Georgia State University, USA. Her research was published in the journal JAMA Dermatology.

In her research, Dr. Shipp used special measuring devices that show with high accuracy the amount of ultraviolet radiation emitted by the lamp.

Measurements were carried out in different positions using 17 types of ultraviolet lamps. A similar experiment was conducted in 16 beauty salons.

According to Dr. Shipp and her team, the amount of ultraviolet radiation emitted by different lamp models varied greatly.

Dr. Shipp believes that even regular visits to beauty salons have practically no effect on the risk of developing cancer.

However, scientists still recommend not to forget about safety rules, for example the use of sunscreens.

This is necessary to limit the negative influence of ultraviolet radiation and to prevent early skin aging.

Dr. Chris Adigun, a professor of dermatology at NYU Medical Center, agrees that those who prefer to get their manicures done at salons should use UV protection.< /p>

So don’t deprive yourself of getting a professional manicure, but don’t forget about sunscreen.
