The diet was created by the French doctor Pierre Dukan and is characterized as high in protein and low in fat. This diet consists of different phases and during each phase different foods are eaten in a different way.

The first phase of the diet is abrupt, aggressive and shocking. Carbohydrates are stopped completely and only protein is eaten for a short time. Proteins are strong foods that move slowly through the digestive system. They have a highly satiating effect and you are less likely to feel very hungry after them.

Proteins are low in calories compared to fats and carbohydrates. The fact that they are digested slowly makes the body burn extra calories. Drink 2 liters of water a day, walk for at least 20 minutes and avoid butter and other fats.

The second phase of the Dukan diet alternates between all-protein days and days where large amounts of fruits and vegetables are eaten. No dairy products. This diet is followed until you reach your ideal weight. In this phase, meat products and fish can be combined with fresh and processed fruits and vegetables.

The third phase of the Dukan diet focuses on weight maintenance. Gradually, you can start to include more and more foods in your menu, making sure that the calories are 100, 120 or 130 less than the daily need.

The fourth phase is called stabilization and gives guidelines for life after the diet. After you have lost weight, you start eating normally, but you must follow the rules of proper nutrition. Eat protein, vegetables, fruit, a slice of cheese and two slices of bread every day. Pick a day of the week where you eat nothing but protein. Walk every day and drink 2 liters of water.
